Parents and Spectator Code of Conduct

It is expected that parents/guardians of ATA Martial Arts students shall conduct themselves in a manner that is of the highest standards while at tournaments or any other ATA sanctioned event.

As a parent or guardian of a competitor, I hereby pledge to provide support, care, and encouragement for my child and I promise to uphold the following Code of Conduct:

  • I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all participants, spectators, judges, and volunteers.
  • I will place the emotional and physical well-being of my child ahead of any personal desire to win, remembering that the tournament is for the student and not for the spectator.
  • I agree not to interfere with any judging activities or to stand near the judges, scorekeeper, timekeeper, or ring. I will maintain a distance of 3 feet away from the ring and competitors from ring bow into ring bow out.
  • I agree to have my child sit respectfully at the edge of the ring designated for competitors, and I will not communicate privately with them from ring bow in to ring bow out.
  • I agree not to criticize or make any disparaging comments about any participant, judge, official, volunteer, or spectator.
  • I am also responsible for the behavior of any guest that I may bring. If any guest that I bring violates any provision of this Code, I agree that both the guest and I will be subject to the same consequences as if I myself were responsible for the violation
  • I agree to the no coaching rule in the ATA Official Tournament Rules and as re-stated below:

"There will be no coaching from the sidelines by anyone, including color belts, black belts, instructors, family members, or friends. This no coaching rule is in effect from the time the competitors are bowed into their ring through the time they are bowed out of their ring. This includes quietly telling a student what to do between matches in sparring, or before a tie breaker. Cheering and offering encouragement is indeed allowed and encouraged. Competitor receiving coaching will be penalized in the following manor:

  • 1st Offense - Competitor shall receive a non-contact warning
  • 2nd and subsequent offenses - opponent will be awarded a penalty point
  • After the 2nd offense - The person coaching shall be removed from the ring area. Failure to leave the ring area for the coaching offense will result in disqualification of the competitor, and no refund will be provided."
